Scandinav-Ian
While visiting from Canada and staying in New Zealand for my sister's wedding, I participated in my first “Scandinavian Saturday Night”. Uncle Pete was visiting from far away as well, and he had a guitar with him. The rest of us travelled only with our toe taps for instruments, but made memories of a great night abroad with family and friends. Playing Jim Croce, Eagles, The Beatles, and taking requests of any other band we could name, this man could play it all. Seven years later, Lauryn and I continue in the Kiwi-Norwegian spirit and sing along and play music on Saturday night.
Back in Canada and now a year plus without owning a car, we are learning to enjoy another Scandinavian tradition, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing”. (I just ordered new winter boots, and there are new toques on the way!) After conducting a brief search into the origin of this phrase, it is well-known among children who’s parents encourage them to get outside in all types of weather. I too, need to be persuaded, but when we do go out—walking to work, on errands, or for pleasure, it is nice to see others enjoying the outdoors too.
Music and Movement connect us together. The tunes on a guitar transcend generations and can take you back somewhere special or to a place you have never been before. Until we can get away and celebrate with friends and families across the world, turn your Saturday nights into concert-hallways, and get outside “always and in all ways”.
This week, it continues to feel like Scandinavia. It darkens early and the weather dictates the appropriateness of our attire. We will roll about inside on Saturday at our Weekend Workout, and stroll about in the snow and seasonal weather changes as they come.
Stay Strong, and “Boots, hats and coats on!”
