How to find the right kettlebell for you?
Use the Goldilocks principle — Just Right. Too light of a load and you will not progress your skills, but if the load is too heavy, your safety and strength progressions will be compromised. Start with your own bodyweight, groove the pattern and pick out your weight to build strength with the kettlebell. If you can, invest in a “heavy” and a “light” kettlebell.
How we train with our bells:
Ian’s light bell is a 24 kg, and alternates heavy sets with 32 or 36 kg. He weighs 180-185 lbs at 6 feet tall. When Ian started training with kettlebells, he had the most success starting with the 16 kg for “light” and the 24 kg for heavy.
Lauryn’s light bell is a 16 kg and alternates between the 20-24 for heavy lifts. She weighs 137-142 lbs and is 5’3 (and 3/4). Originally Lauryn found the 12 kg enough to learn the basics and used the 16kg as a heavier load.
General Guidelines for prospective students
General guidelines for beginner women to invest in a “light” 6-8 kg kettlebell and a 12kg for the “heavy”. For beginner men, 12-16 kg as “light” and 20-24 kg for “heavy”.
For advanced women kettlebell users, we recommend 12-16 kg for “light” and 16-24 kg for “heavy”. Advanced men invest in a “light” 24 kg bell and a heavy in the 32-36 kg range.
